On July 27, 1999, one of SeaWorld Orlando's adult female beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucus) gave birth to a calf. At birth the male calf was approximately 4 to 4.5 feet long and keepers estimated he weighed approximately 200 pounds. He was the first beluga calf born at SeaWorld Orlando. Beluga calves are typically dark gray at birth. They lighten gradually, attaining the bright white adult color in a few years.
