Baby Giraffe Birth Announcement

Tampa Bay, FL (Spring, 2008)

On April 24, 2008, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay had the largest giraffe calf ever born at the park.  Cupid, a reticulated giraffe, gave birth to a healthy 191 pound, 6.2 foot tall, male calf. Giraffes give birth in a standing position and the calves drop nearly 6 feet to the ground.  The six foot fall does not hurt the calf but actually stimulates the baby to take its first breath.  On average, giraffe calves are 150 pounds and stand 6 feet tall.  They are able to stand within 20 minutes of birth, which allows them to nurse within the first hour.  Both Cupid and baby are doing well and expected to be in a guest viewing area in a couple weeks.
